Early Detection Saves Lives!
A yearly mammogram can increase your chance
of surviving breast cancer by more than 40%.
*Caregivers at York Hospital can’t overstate the importance of this message. Listen here as two members of our York Hospital family share their story about the importance of early detection with NEWS CENTER Maine.
DID YOU KNOW … Just as in our York Breast Care location, our Wells’ Breast Care service is exclusively staffed by Fellowship-trained breast radiologists, Dr. Amanda Lewis, Dr. Becky Hultman and Dr. Kristen Kokonis. We offer 3D tomosynthesis for all patients and have a dedicated ultrasound unit on-site for all diagnostic imaging work-ups and screening needs in patients with dense breast tissue. All patients receive same-day results during their Wells’ visit unless they prefer the results to be sent to them. YH Breast Care in Wells is staffed by the same caring team of physicians and specialized technologists as the York Hospital Breast Care location in York.
A note from Dr. Amanda Demetri-Lewis, Breast Care Director:
York Hospital Breast Care at York Hospital and in Wells is now open for both diagnostic and screening exams. Our patient’s safety is of utmost importance to us. To that end, we are spacing out patient appointments so there are fewer patients seen allowing appropriate distancing. We are following CDC guidelines to ensure patient and staff safety. Both patients and staff are to wear face masks (provided for you if needed). Hand sanitizer and hand washing stations are available to our patients and all patient spaces are thoroughly cleansed between patients. We want you to feel safe and comfortable when you have your exam with us. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to resuming your care.
To provide increased access for our patients in a socially distant format, we are offering the opportunity to get a mammogram and leave without your results. You will be contacted with your results typically within 24 for hours. We will also mail you a copy of your results per MQSA/FDA regulations.

The Covid-19 Vaccine and Your Mammogram –
Schedule Now or Later?
A Message for our Breast Care Patients from Dr. Amanda Lewis, York Hospital Breast Radiologist:
Recent media coverage regarding the efficacy of a mammogram, following administration of a 365速发国际APP下载 vaccine, has caused concern among women – our patients included – when planning for this annual test. Reports have indicated that side effects from the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine may include swollen and tender lymph nodes. These were found in 11.6% of patients following the first dose, and 16% of patients after the second dose of the Moderna; lower amounts were detected following the Pfizer vaccine.
This does not mean that you should cancel your mammogram. The vaccine that prevents 365速发国际APP下载 can cause swollen lymph nodes under the arm in which the shot was given; and because your lymph nodes are integral to the body’s immune response, the swelling is a sign that your body is responding to the vaccine and building up defenses against the corona virus. These lymph nodes, if reactive and enlarged, may be imaged on your mammogram. Concerns arise because breast cancer can also cause enlargement of these lymph nodes if cancer cells spread to the lymph nodes.
We continue to recommend that our patients have routine mammography without delay in care. However, we ask that you let us know the date of your vaccination, along with arm chosen for the shot. This will be helpful when reading the mammogram images, and whether to consider if additional imaging or follow-up may be needed. However, for those who prefer to schedule their screening mammogram based on the timing of their 365速发国际APP下载 vaccine, the appointment may be made prior to the first vaccine dose, or four to six weeks following the second dose.
